Anti-Spam / Anti-Malware Researcher

IronPort Systems, a Cisco Business Unit, is looking for a results-oriented applied-researcher in the Security Applications Analysis Group. The Analysis Group is responsible for identifying and quantifying the impact of techniques for improving the efficacy of our email and web security applications. The Researcher will study spam and malware missed by existing techniques and apply disciplined analysis to identify new techniques for identifying spam and malware. Deliverables include research proposals, research documents describing a technique and quantitative measures of expected efficacy improvement, prototypes, functional specifications and ad-hoc measurement tools. As an applied researcher, the candidate should be comfortable engaging in healthy debate with team members and developing production code as required. Development will be on a UNIX-based platform primarily using Python or C as an implementation language.

Required Experience and Skills:

• 3+ years of applied research or development experience in email, web or network security or a related field
• Understanding of security, including email and/or web threats
• Experience turning research ideas into actionable designs
• Proficient with Unix and databases
• Working knowledge of Perl
• Facility with applied statistics or machine learning
• Advanced degree in a relevant field is desirable
• Professional experience developing any service-oriented software, especially with scaling, QOS and uptime requirements desired
• Relevant experience in reviewing designs, specifications, schedules, and resource estimates
• Cross functional skills: must be able to communicate other groups to agree on testing requirements, hardware specifications, deployment configurations, scheduling, etc.
• Comfortable working in a group with several ongoing concurrent projects.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Characterize and quantify problems related to spam/malware not detected by existing technologies and new techniques being used to spread them
• Propose techniques to stop malware and spam and how the impact of these techniques should be measured
• Develop functional overviews and function specs summarizing the problem being addressed by a new system and its various components
• Publish research documents documenting the methodology and findings of a research project, including quantitative measures of expected efficacy improvement
• Develop and document prototypes to simulate the behavior of a new technique
• Design and monitor tools to measure a particular problem or the contribution of a particular technique over time
• Design and implement production code for projects as required
• Work closely with a cross functional team to design new features and resolve issues as they arise

Performance Testing Engineer

Job Description:

The Performance Testing Engineer will be primarily responsible for developing and maintaining tools used in automated performance testing of IronPort's email and web appliances; executing and triaging performance tests; working with development to resolve performance issues; and publishing benchmarks and sizing documents. The Performance Engineer will possess a strong background in QA and engineering, with extensive experience identifying and resolving performance issues in a UNIX environment. The performance testing process is collaborative, and as such the position requires strong organizational and people skills.

Required Experience and Skills:

• Must have 3 year professional experience developing and executing performance tests.
• Expert command of some UNIX variant; able to perform minor system administration duties
• Working knowledge of Python, Perl or other object scripting language
• Strong knowledge of networking debugging

Responsibilities:

Technical Marketing Engineers (TMEs) are product focused, working with a cross-functional team to ensure that the products that IronPort is bringing to market is successful in a wide variety of customer engagements.

TMEs have intrinsic product knowledge as well as detailed technical knowledge about a variety of networking environments where the product has to reside in. TMEs should have the ability to clearly articulate the technical differentiators of a product as well as work with IronPort Product Managers in identifying customer requirements and product gaps and helping PMs prioritize those gaps. Extensive customer and field interaction is a must.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Responsible for creating Technical collateral, application notes, technical white papers, presentations, demonstrations, and providing deal support for IronPort's Web Security product line
• Responsible for creating and maintaining vendor inter-operability matrices for IronPort's Web Security Appliance product line
• Assist in BU activity regarding performance and competitive analysis. Responsible for creating and maintaining field-facing performance and sizing matrix for IronPort's Web Security Appliance product line
• Support sales and marketing efforts as required. Some travel required to support field and marketing activity
• Support product launch activities and assist with Tradeshows, Conferences and Technical Sales Training or Channel Partner Training activities.
• Respond to customer or field inquiries, assist with Technical RFPs and work with a cross-functional team of PMs, SEs, Engineers as required.

Required Experience and Skills:

•BA/BS (business, marketing, or engineering preferred), MBA or equivalent a plus.
• Driven, with an entrepreneurial spirit and sense of urgency. Must be resourceful, proactive and aggressive.
• Highly organized, detail-oriented and possessing a high level of integrity.
• Team player that works well in collaborative situations and start-up environments.

Job Description:

• Perform analysis of competitive products by self-directed research leveraging all available resources. • Manage the process of product reviews with industry publications. Position IronPort products to win reviews. Provide technical direction to reviewers and testers on why IronPort is the best choice. Develop a reviewer's guide to influence the criteria and methodology for product reviews.
• Act as a company representative in customer, analyst, industry group, and press-facing situations.
• Support sales and marketing efforts as required. Some travel required (including international).

Required Experience and Skills:

• BS/BA degree, CS or EE degree a plus, MBA or business classes a plus.

Job Description:
The QA Technical Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the quality of IronPort’s E-Mail Security Products. Possessing strong whitebox testing experience, the QA Technical Engineer will be involved in the entire QA cycle from requirements evaluation, to test case development and execution, to product readiness, defect status, and test results reporting. The successful candidate will use knowledge of the software development lifecycle, use case definition, and testing tools and methodologies to ensure customer satisfaction with our initial and future releases. QA Technical Engineer will be an independent self-starter who can multi-task across projects and effectively organize your time under tight deadlines. In addition, the QA Technical Engineer will maintain the performance and functional testing tools, integrating enhancements as needed.
Requirements:
• Must have a minimum of 4 years’ solid testing and programming experience in a product environment.
• Possess outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Must utilize these skills to communicate effectively across all groups in the organization.
• Demonstrated experience in defining and creating test harnesses from engineering and product management/marketing documentation
• Proven track record of delivering quality in a highly available, scalable environment
• MUST HAVE extensive hands-on experience with UNIX commands; Shell scripting and administrator experience is a plus
• White box testing experience, especially in C, Python or Perl
• Experience setting up a robust test environment, and writing test harnesses and test scripts that are reusable for successive product releases. Must be willing to solicit feedback on tools and incorporate enhancements into them as needed.
• Have practical understanding of QA processes and methodologies; some experience with formal software standards (CMM, IEEE, ISO 9001) desired
• Experience with formal defect-tracking software and automation tools.
• Possess strong problem-solving and analytical skills; perform detailed analysis of test results to uncover product defects and incomplete test cases
• Must be able to define acceptance criteria and report on the current state of the software to various groups within the organization
• Solid understanding of the build release process and configuration management
• Able to create and maintain release procedure guidelines to QA for each internal and external release
